Summary
The Ministry of Defence is looking for three Internal Communications Officers (Campaigns) to join the central Internal Communications team. This is a varied and exciting opportunity to work within the busy Directorate of Defence Communications (DDC). This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
The central Internal Communications team delivers and coordinates communications to both military and civilian staff across the entirety of the MOD and its constituent parts and is pivotal in creating a shared understanding of Defense’s vision, enabling all staff to understand their contribution to achieving its goals.
One of the largest Whitehall departments, the MOD workforce is made up of over 250,000 employees, across around 4,000 sites worldwide and as such, a strong and high-performing Internal Comms function is critical to our success. Our employees cover some of the broadest roles in government; including soldiers, sailors, pilots, and office workers, there are roles as diverse as doctors, teachers, police officers, engineers and scientists. Many are frontline operational roles and are not routinely connected to the Defence infrastructure, which necessitates a nuanced and agile approach to Internal Comms.
Our team is London based, and while much of our work is done within the digital workspace, we aim to come together in-person for two to three days a week, to help develop our relationships, share successes, problem-solve and plan for the future.
Job description
Reporting to the Internal Communications Manager, you will join a growing Internal Communications team within the central Campaigns arm of Defence Internal Communications. You will play a key role in raising awareness and building engagement across a number of internal campaigns, with a particular focus on culture, values, strategy and future ways of working.
You will engage with stakeholders across Defence to design audience and insight-led communications and engagement plans to help raise awareness and build momentum around cultural change, across a diverse mix of Defence personnel.
Making use of a full range of internal communications channels including intranet content, social media, internal digital platforms, blogs, face-to-face events, video and management briefs, you will be committed to strengthening the voice of staff across Defence.
We’re looking for someone with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain great working relationships at all levels of the organization. You’ll be curious, creative and open to challenging the status quo – pushing us as a team and as an organization to consider new ways to approach and deliver against our objectives.
You will work closely with our counterparts in the regional Internal Communications teams across Defence, as well as other parts of the Directorate of Defence Communications (News, External Campaigns, Digital and Strategy & Planning), to develop and co-deliver campaigns.
Responsibilities
Develop IC activity and campaigns that engage Defence employees and support organizational change, built upon the four ‘Engage for Success’ enablers (strategic narrative; engaging managers; employee voice; and organizational integrity)
Provide professional and comprehensive internal communications advice to stakeholders across Defence, across all ranks and grades, pushing back as needed
Develop collaborative working relationships with the Insight and Evaluation, Digital, and External Campaigns teams
Work closely with embedded comms colleagues across the Defence People Team (DPT), to develop, coordinate and implement long-term, proactive, multi-channel/multimedia Internal Communications
Champion and demonstrate best practice in the team, prioritizing learning and development and supporting your team to continually improve its skills, individually and collectively
Working flexibly, you may also be required to work to support the other arms of the DDC IC team as priorities shift and resources need to flex.
