About us:
The Internship role will be working on cutting edge space programmes, for customers such as the European Space Agency within the Data Engineering group at Stevenage. This technical role will involve working in the area of development, test and delivery of cutting edge software solutions for spacecraft data management requiring a good grounding in related software development & data management technologies.
The Data Engineering group supports spacecraft programmes with their data management needs. This includes involvement in data & software solutions in the context of system level design, development, and verification for on-going European Space Agency (ESA) programmes such as Sample Fetch Rover, ExoMars Rover & Biomass and commercial telecommunication programmes such as OneSAT.
The team is not only integrated into the programmes, with visibility of the programme phases but has involvement in phases of critical software solutions used across programmes. Our team is a mixture of technical experts who are all passionate about finding technical solutions to support the space programmes. We are an ideal mix of people who can help you develop technically and personally in the role.
What you will be doing:
As a Data Engineering Intern you will gain experience across development, test and delivery of software solutions for data management within spacecraft development across a number of space programmes.
The tasks will be varied and require you to use different skills (technical, project management, communication etc.) in order to complete them successfully.
You will initiate and support activities within the team gaining experience ‘end to end’; from analysing use cases of spacecraft engineering domains, developing proto-type software solutions to final test and delivery.

Our placements are open to Undergraduates only . Therefore it is mandatory for candidates to be an undergraduate for the whole duration of the placement.
Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following:
- Degree in computer science, software engineering, information technology or related field
- Good working knowledge of Java programming (Java 11 preferred)
- Good working knowledge of working with database technology (non-relational preferred e.g. MongoDB)
- Good working knowledge of Github (willing to present their published github)
- Technical knowledge desirable: Front End Development (e.g. Angular, React), Web API framework (e.g. Spring boot / Rest API), Intellij, Web/GUI development (UI/UX, HTML, CSS, Javascript/Typescript), Scrum/Agile, SQL, PL/SQL, Subversion, Microsoft Access database, Jenkins

- Hours: 37.5 hours per week
- Salary: As Junior Software Developer, you’ll receive a salary of between £22,000 and £28,000 per annum, depending on experience level, plus you’ll benefit from health cover and a contributory pension scheme and life cover.
As a Junior Software Developer you’ll be responsible for maintaining and creating software solutions that support a variety of business processes using a combination of modern and legacy software in both browser and desktop environments
Key Accountabilities;
- Work closely with senior developers and business analysts to understand client processes and requirements
- Provide software task estimates
- Create and maintain technical documentation
- Demonstrate interim and final solutions
- Integrate where possible other solutions and technologies to improve efficiency
- Working closely with all staff on a day to day basis, often in the form of support, problem solving or guidance to ensure they fully understand the customers’ requirements and specifications
To be successful in this role, you’ll have strong programming skills and recent experience with C#, Javascript and DBMS
In addition to the above you’ll also need to demonstrate the following;
- Good understanding and interpretation of project requirements

The following attributes would be desirable, but not essential;
